Mesothelioma Symptoms
Mesothelioma Symptoms 5
Did you know that asbestos could cause cancer? Asbestos releases fibers and particles on being processed which are too big for the lungs and cannot be expelled. The lining protecting the abdominal cavity, heart, chest wall and other internal organs of the body are damaged by these fibers. Most frequently the disease arises in the cells lining the sacs of the chest (pleura) or the abdomen (peritoneum).
Pleura mesothelioma is the common form of cancer and shows symptoms in the area of the chest. Peritoneal mesothelioma is not so common.. This results in affecting different organs of the abdomen, and thus mesothelioma symptoms appear in this part of the body.. Peritoneal mesothelioma symptoms include pain and swelling of the abdomen, bowel obstruction, nausea and vomiting. Pericardial mesothelioma is very rare.. Cancer cells attack the sac protecting the heart.
Symptoms of mesothelioma start to appear 30 – 50 years after the worker has inhaled asbestos particles. Shortness of breath is the first complain patients make. Chest pain is also one of the first complaints. However, the pain is mostly not pleuritic, meaning that it does not increase with deep breathing..
In the last stage of the disease, shortness of breath increases and weight loss, appetite reduces suddenly and sweating at night starts to appear. When the tumor spreads to other parts of the body, patients may experience change in voice, loss of function of the diaphragm and symptoms associated with affected area and structures affected.
Symptoms can be seen only in the last stage when cancer cells attack the abdomen. The following signs and symptoms can be seen in severe cases:
1. Raspy, persistent cough 2. Blood coughed up 3. Sudden weight loss of about 10 percent or more 4. Muscle Fatigue 5. Consistent chest pain or pain while breathing 6. Lumps appearing under skin on the chest 7. Anemia 8. Pain and swelling in the abdomen 9. Constipation 10. Nausea 11. Abnormal heartbeat 12. Jaundice 13. Blood colored sputum 14. Wheezing or shortness of breathShortness of breath 15. Drop in blood sugar level
