Mesothelioma Symptoms 3
A material commonly used in many industries is known as asbestos. The processing of asbestos releases fibers and particles which are too big in size and the lungs find it difficult to expel it. The protective lining of the body’s internal organs are often harmed and damaged by these particles. This result in a medical condition called mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer.
Mesothelium is the protective lining which is harmed by asbestos fibers. In most cases, the common site of mesothelioma is the outer lining of the internal chest wall and lungs called the pleura. Cancer cells may also be found in the sac that covers the heart, vaginalis or the peritoneum.
Fluid is accumulated in the abdominal cavity or the chest wall due to the presence of asbestos particles. This results in pain and swelling of the abdomen or chest. Chest x-ray is done for the diagnosis of mesothelioma. Presence of fluid in the organs is detected by a biopsy which helps in confirming the diagnosis.
In the beginning, mesothelioma symptoms include common complaints made by people suffering from viral pneumonia, fever or jaundice.. Shortness of breath, abdomen and chest pain, consistent dry cough and blood colored sputum are some of the common symptoms.
Since fluid has been accumulated in the chest, patients of pleural mesothelioma experience pain and swelling. When volume of fluid increases, dyspnea, commonly known as shortness of breath followed by pain, varying from mild to stabbing, may also appear..
Mesothelioma affecting the peritoneum shows symptoms such as weakness, persistent cough/wheezing, fever, irregular blood clot of veins, loss of weight, and abdomen pain because of fluid accumulation. Pain in swallowing may also be experienced since there is inflammation around the neck and face.
It is hard to diagnose the disease since mesothelioma symptoms start to appear 30 – 50 years after the person has been exposed to asbestos.
